In contrast, Clifford (1990) declared that this area was one of great contro-versy. Although Lennane (1988) has claimed that Australia has a high inci-dence of alcohol-related brain damage (ARBD), Clifford argued that cognitive impairment is difficult to measure, and raised doubts about whether ARBD exists in alcohol-dependent people or in those considered “social drinkers.” Despite equivocal findings in this area, studies have reported various neurologic and NP abnormalities in people with excessive drinking patterns, and have reported associated problems with the early assessment and treatment of this group. This study examined the potential of a screening tool for the assessment of cognitive impairment in excessive alcohol users.
